Hong Kong!

December 5, 2011

Hey folks! Sorry it’s been so long (again). Lots of stuff happened, work, some distracting sniffly illnesses, but most importantly, John and I went to Hong Kong for the Thanksgiving weekend. It was awesome! We had Peking duck instead of roast turkey. If you have a chance, go there! Here are a bunch of pictures!

The first thing we did when we got there was to check out the German bar, of course. I thought it would be a beer garden (because, umm… it was called Biergarten), but the beer and sausages were delicious.

Then we headed down to the promenade, where there is a statue of BRUCE LEE.

I tried to get a photo of the two of us in front of the skyline, but my arm isn’t long enough. Still, it’s important to remind you how cute John is:

(Yeah, I don’t know what I was doing with my face.) Look! an old-timey junk, and skyscrapers! And that famous air pollution!

Oh, and here’s a picture of the mendhi that my new friend Fazilat put on my hands a few days before we left. Nice, right? Incidentally, having henna painted on your hands is a very effective way of getting people at the Manila airport stare at you like you’re from Mars.

There’s so much neon in Kowloon it looks like Blade Runner:

The next day, we headed to Hong Kong park, which has a pretty amazing aviary. Here’s one of the dozens of photos I have of pretty birdies.

I also saw some giant doves the size of chickens. When they cooed, it was like a foghorn. We had lunch in the park at the Lock Cha tea house, which is adorable and has fantastic vegetarian dim sum, and something like 200 varieties of tea.

Then we went to the history museum, which is totally worth checking out.

The weather was beautiful on Sunday, so we rode the Star Ferry instead of the subway.

While I’m on the subject, the public transportation in Hong Kong is wonderful, convenient, and cheap. The taxis are cheap too.

That day, we also got this great backstage view of an opera performance.

And about an hour later, lion dancers at the Kung Fu Corner in Kowloon Park.

…and then it was time to go to the airport and fly home to Guam. By the time we went through all of the security screenings, we were getting punchy.
