Extremely free-range

November 27, 2010

Oh my goodness! John was mowing the yard today and accidentally scared away a hen, who abandoned a nest with a dozen eggs. They’re in the fridge now. I’m a little scared to eat them, but probably the feral chicken eggs are safer than the ones in the grocery store, which came here all the way from California. Right?

Holy cow! As long as you crack them into a separate bowl first, you’ll be fine. There is a chance they are fertile, if any roosters are anywhere around. So depending on how long she’s been sitting on them (let’s assume just one chicken, so no fewer than 12 days), they might be rancid or if they are fertilized, they might be halfway between chicken and egg, so to speak… At least a few of the eggs are fine to eat. Too bad she didn’t number them as she laid them or you’d know which ones not to eat. 😉

Yeah, there are roosters everywhere. And “halfway between chicken and egg” sounds like an experience that will end with me being vegan. Maybe I should just put them back outside and let the monitor lizards eat them.
