For sale: weird crap

August 24, 2010

So, maybe it’s my imagination, but there seems to be a lot of weirdness going on in Guam retail.

Part of the problem is with language, I think. T-shirts with random English phrases are kind of like all of the folks out there with tattoos in languages that they don’t understand. It’s best to tread carefully.

Or maybe the kids these days really DO want to party ’til they’re homeless. While wearing fanny packs. I don’t know.

Then there’s this Tecate-branded trucker cap with integrated bottle opener, which is actually pretty useful, and a Tecate on a hot day is awfully refreshing. But how does that work, having a bottle opener on your hat? I guess you’re just supposed to wear it really, really tight?

Finally, this:

Peanut-butter-and-banana-sandwich-flavored hot cocoa with Elvis Presley’s face on it. So many questions: 1) Why did they leave out the bacon? 2) Hot cocoa? It’s 85 degrees today, with 82% relative humidity. Nobody wants hot cocoa. But I guess that’s why it’s at Ross.

The cocoa is a kōan. Seek not answers.
